    Life Timeline

    Using AOL’s CircaVie, which has recently shut down, you could make a timeline of your partners life from birth until now including all the “love-dovey” stuff you did together in between.

    Capzles offers a similar service.

    Timeline

    Timeline

    Now something that would do this automatically from Flickr would be awesome. And it could use geotagging as well.

    Be Who You Were Born To Be

    When you die you can’t take anything or anyone with you. This includes your family, friends, money and belongings. Memories are all that remain. Make them count.

    “Vance and Madison inspire me. So do others like them who refuse the excuses and follow their hearts against all odds. Because of them, I realize that being “me”, in exactly the way I was born to be, is the only way to truly live.”

    “The best thing we can do is to accept the fact that labels mean nothing, and realize that the seemingly nonsensical choices of others actually do make a lot of sense if we have the patience and fortitude to uncover the reasons behind these choices.”

    How Making Money Can Help the World

    Making money can seem a goal that goes against helping the world becoming a better place. I was talking with a friend about this and suddenly I realized maybe I could write a few lines about it. Maybe first I should say the context in which this discussion occurred it was related with entrepreneurs (specifically people starting startup companies), so the real question I’m trying to answer is:

    How making money with your startup company can help the world becoming a better place?

    I think there isn’t anything wrong with making money and help the world, you just need to be an entrepreneur. In fact, one of the things that the world desperately needs right now, is that more people become entrepreneurs and initiatives that support them in the process. Don’t shoot me just yet!! The reason I say that is because the organizations and companies that those people will create, are the best options we have to help us with the real things that the world needs in order to become a better place.

    And what exactly are those things? And how exactly can they help? In almost every area of the society (environment, politics, education, health, etc) there is many things that can be done: more environment caring, more recycling, fighting poverty, bringing technology to the poor countries, fighting corruption, fighting world hunger, more efficient fuels, etc.). And the products that big and small organizations produce should try to address these problems. But these are just my thoughts. What about you, what do you think?

    15 Great Web Apps

    Here are 15 great web apps both me and @aaires liked, followed by the technology they were built with:

    – Delicious – mod_perl, HTML::Mason, and MySQL
    – Twitter – rails+joyent
    – Monster Jobs – Java
    – WordPress – PHP
    – Dokuwiki – PHP
    – Flickr PHP+MySQL+Perl+Java+Apache+Shards+Memcached+Squid+Smarty+etc
    – Youtube – Python+Apache+Linux+MySQL+psico+lighttpd
    – Fireftp – C++ + Javascript
    – 280atlas.com – Javascript (Cappuccino + Ojective-J)
    – gmail, greader, maps, calendar, etc. – Python+Java+C+++Javascript
    – piclens – C++ + Actionscript 3
    – Amazon – C++ + Perl + Mason + Java
    – Picnik – Actionscript 3
    – Pandora – Actionscript 3
    – Aviary Phoenix – Actionscript 3

    It seems that a great web app doesn’t depend on the technology because everyone is using something different. Is this a fallacy?

    Javascript is used by almost all of them but together with at least one other language.

    I can hear you ask: What criteria did you use?

    * Slick UI and look and feel (Aviary, etc)
    * Great content and usefulness (youtube, delicious)
    * Usefulness (flickr, monster)
    * Modularity and capacity to extend (WordPress)
    * Great concept (Twitter)
    * ..

    Next week I’m going to be in Portugal for a week. If anyone wants to get together drop me an e-mail or call. I’ll be arriving on Sunday and staying in Portimão until Wednesday, and then in Lisbon until the following Sunday.

    Meaningful Work

    I was going through some old files on my laptop and found this notes on “Meaningful Work”.

    A job is way to make money. A calling is a way of life.”

    To find meaningful work, you need to know what work means to you. What does work mean to me?

    1. discipline (you have to work every day, get up early, etc.)
    2. sacrifice (sometimes things are not what you expect, sometimes people are mean, sometimes people are stupid, etc.)
    3. creativity (you can create things, design new things), perseverance (it takes perseverance to meet the work goals), etc.
    4. personal fulfilment (if you can manage to do things that are appreciated by others, if you’re recognized in your work place as being knowledgeable, trustworthy, on-time, smart, etc. then you will feel this fulfilment and you’ll feel good).
    5. having fun (I have to enjoy what I’m doing, that’s an important part of the job)

    I once said to a bunch of high-school kids in a speech I gave that work is not the thing that will decide if you’re happy or not. And I still believe that. If you have the right conscience and energy you will be above work, you will be in bliss.

    Remember to play.

    Pay attention to your dreams and fantasies. Dreams can help us to uncover those aspects of our being that have not yet found expression in our lives.
